Independence Day is a reminder that I take my independence for granted. That doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it. It means I sometimes forget that I’ve never had to live without it.
Others stood up and answered the call for the benefit of all of us. Their families at home sacrificed too, waiting and wondering when it would all be over. And even now, when they return, many continue the battle for recovery years after the experience. This is what I think about when we celebrate the Fourth.
And it’s not just our heroic military. It’s also the folks who bravely took a chance for independence in wooden ships hundreds of years before GPS existed. It’s the explorers who risk it all to reach new heights mapping new territories on earth and beyond. It’s scientists who dedicate their lives to eliminating disease and feeding planet. It’s leaders who champion human rights. I celebrate them all.
Without the commitments of brave patriots, we wouldn’t be here talking about the contributions they made - and continue to make - to our quality of life. We might not be here at all. Next to their contributions, I am truly humbled.
Thank you. I will never forget how fortunate I am.
